One of Haydn's many lasting contributions to Western Classical music was his advancement of the piano trio. Here the piano is accompanied by violin and cello, with the strings adding an extra timbral dimension to the overall sound of the piece. Even when the strings mimic the lines of the piano, the supporting instruments' impact is felt. Like much of Haydn's music, this piece is short, simple and highly entertaining, so be sure to listen to Haydn's Trio Hob 28.
