Mozart's Trio In E Flat Major KV498, better known as the Kegelstatt Trio, is written for the unique combination of piano, viola and clarinet. The timbral variety that the combination of instruments brings makes this trio piece especially enjoyable. The viola and clarinet do not shy away from the melody, though the piano is in the foreground for most of the piece. Mozart's knack for writing simple and charming melodies is plainly visible in this piece, as is the composer's willingness to experiment with instrumentation. Mozart's Trio KV498 is a unique and enjoyable piece that deserves a thorough listen.
