New Indie artist Craig Alan Stevens prefers to stay outside the box, as his aptly-titled muli-genre album "Suburban Underground" blurs stylistic borders and defies convention, but certainly not distinction. The raw, acoustic instrumentation ornamented with unusually seductive beatbox mixes constructs a vividly expressive sound that is equal parts classic and industrial. His rugged, smoky vocals further tenderize the torchy, folkie "More Time," evocative of a lake house holiday with red wine, candlelight, and a light drizzle of piano. And goth rock fans will find instant affinity with "No One," a cold, unnerving and anguished trip-hop track that darkens with every beat. It's not all gloom doom elsewhere, at least musically. Stevens toys with funk on "We Are All Underground" and folk on "Confidence To Live," all the while poring over the plight of suburbia. Do not miss "Suburban Underground," now on Freeplay Indie!
